Leaflets:and Flyer's good marketing practice

What is good marketing practice? Nobody is very sure! We suppose that to know the answer to that it’s necessary to know what bad marketing practice is.  Leaflets and leaflet distribution: a political technique!.gifThere is marketing for its own sake, beautiful imagery used on websites, posters, billboards, leaflets and adverts and very clever trendy, cool scripts and tableaus acted out on TV selling ..............goodness knows what! There are great ads that sell tea but not the specific brand they are advertising. It all sounds a jamboree of too much money sloshing around, too many ideas bounding around and not sufficient tactical knowledge applied. Not bad marketing strictly speaking, but probably mis-targeted and undirected marketing – too much creative and not enough plan!

Of course bad marketing practice can just be bad design, bad strategy and bad planning which have led to failure; nothing that a good course in understanding marketing principles will not rectify. This is clearly bad marketing. There is however another low quality marketing which we have become tolerant of. A prevailing herd mentality in marketing is apparent and this means that trends are followed too easily. This world of marketing is seen as a glamour industry by so many, with lots of suit wearing, business lunches, and expensive account winning but not enough hard core sense which in fact is what is needed in a very serious industry, that really has no mystique about it. It is a very basic industry which supports all sectors of our society, and marketing needs to be taken seriously, and applied in a serious way.

How do leaflets and leaflet distribution fare as a marketing practice? Do you have them built into your marketing strategy or do your leaflets form your strategy on their own?  Well leaflets can be great support for larger schemes where a few techniques form a marketing campaign. A 10 second TV commercial, accompanied by a few radio slots over a period of time, and posters around local town centres, will be ably supported by leaflet distribution; it may be that you will sell many cars or generate lots of interest in your new household cleaner and you will certainly spend an enormous amount of money.  On the other hand, a well thought out leaflet campaign on its own will also serve you very well. A leaflet included as an insert in a selection of postcode areas of a national paper’s circulation, or in a selection of local town’s free papers, or through doors direct to the door mat on a leaflet run might well achieve all the exposure that the multi stranded ad campaign, and that would be great marketing practice!
